"Discussions on the Interference of Cellular Metabolism
by Electromagnetic Field Exposure", E. F. Block IV

ABSTRACT

Electromagnetic radiation(EMR) and field(EMF) exposure is known to disrupt many cellular metabolic processes. Some of these effects are reversible when the radiation and fields are removed or shielded. Others due to the level at transcription of DNA are not so readily reversible.

INTRODUCTION

The effects of EMR and EMF exposure by cellular systems is being increasingly characterized. These effects are known to affect both cellular architecture and metabolic processes. Components of membrane architecture are altered by static electromagnetic fields which are readily reversible, seemingly without adverse effects. Cellular metabolism is altered as a result of exposure to EMR by disrupting transcription of DNA and thus leads to fundamental changes in the capabilities of tissues to perform required homeostatic processes. Particularly sensitive to fluctuations in background EMR and EMF are neuro-endocrine tissues of the Pineal-Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis(PHPA). As these tissues are responsible for coordinating changes in complex behavioral expressions and homeostatic processes, it is particularly important that these tissues be the subject of intense scrutiny in relation to adverse effects due to exposure to man-made EMR and EMF.

DISCUSSION

Exposure to EMF in our modern world is ubiquitous, especially in the context of the developed industrialized nations. We are exposed to EMF in our homes due to the use of many kinds of electrical appliances and the electrical wiring used to power them. In fact, it is not possible to be free of EMF exposure in any town, city or metropolis due to the pervasive presence of the A.C. electricity Grid. Where there is A.C. electricity, there is EMF exposure.

Exposure to EMR is due to the broadcast of microwave, radio, radar, telephone and television communications. Also, increasingly due to cathode ray tube(CRT) or video display monitor(VDM) exposure due to computer usage. These exposures contrast with the EMR exposures we receive as the result of the static discharge of electrical storms. Whereas the results of static discharge release broadband frequency radiation in short bursts, man-made broadcast frequencies are discrete and long lasting. Electrical storms are relatively infrequent in any one locale in contrast to the almost constant overlapping EMR of the metropolis.

Fluctuations in the Interplanetary Magnetic Field(IMF) of our Solar System and the Geomagnetic Field(GMF) of our Earth are rhythmic in nature. These ubiquitous and pervasive background fluctuations are modified by local conditions of the Earth's crust and positions of the Sun and Moon at any one location on the Earth. It is these natural fluctuations within which all organic life on Earth has evolved and continues to evolve. The advent of A.C. electrical power and its applications began in earnest in the 1880s in the industrialized nations. It has only been in the last 50 years that any serious study has been devoted to the effects of EMF and EMR upon living systems. This has been due to pressure from the public at the grassroots level. The powers that be have steadily denied any adverse effects due to man-made EMF and EMR. This is no longer a tenable position as more and more un-biased research presents information to the contrary. This body of knowledge shows that the neuro-endocrine tissues of mammals is adversely affected by man-made EMF and EMR. The effect is due to alteration of the transcription of DNA at the Chromosomal level. The precise manner in which the transcription process, the chromosomal elements involved and the control mechanisms involved are taking place is being worked out. It is an exciting time in biochemistry.
