"The Corresponding Field and Energy Elements of
Acupuncture, Yoga and Bioelectromagnetic Medicine"
E. F. Block IV

ABSTRACT

This article summarizes the common elements and then presents the correspondences between the disciplines of Acupuncture, Yoga and Bioelectromagnetic Medicine. Acupuncture describes the flow of "Chi" through and without the body in various meridians. Blockage or overabundance of "Chi" is described as the root cause of emotional, mental and finally physical symptoms of dis-ease and eventual illness; whether acute or chronic. Yoga describes the "Chakras" as the 7 greater nodes, subtending the physical, for the generation of the fields/energies of the physical body. The nadis are described as lesser transformer points distributed about the physical body but still subtending the physical. Health is maintained at optimum with free flow of the "Ida, Pingala and Sushumna" energies of the 7 nodes as distributed by the nadis. Bioelectromagnetic Medicine deals in the main with the effects of electromagnetic radiation on the human body. Acupuncture and Yoga are semi-scientific and intuitive while Bioelectromagnetic Medicine is hard-core scientific. The middle ground is ripe for exploration and elucidation.

INTRODUCTION

The over all picture of the field/energies of the human body may be pieced together from the various cultural expressions of intuitive science, which hard-core science is now endeavoring to understand. Whereas hard-core science deals with mathematical modeling of physical phenomena, intuitive science deals with what is "real" and endeavors to explain it in words. Both are at polar opposites of a continuum which is the result of the neurophysiological capabilities of the human mind. Both are equally valid. The middle ground between the two extremes is ripe for exploration and elucidation.

My ignorance is due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of a particular subject. My quest for elucidation is fulfilled through search and research. My quest knows no bounds and has no limits. I seek information from ALL sources and use the tools which are available to me. I apologize for my ignorance, do not let my shortcomings deter you from gleaning the information which I am able to impart to you and is the result of my current understanding.

DISCUSSION

The result of my personal experience validates the yogic concept of the 7 Chakras, or as I refer to them, the 7 nodes. These nodes are the center of a system of fields/energies which may be labeled as the morphogenic field of the body. It is difficult to separate out the cultural chaff from the information presented in Yoga. However, I am a North American and I am a trained Western Scientist. I have meditated for over 14 to 16 hours a day for a year and a half. I know that these 7 nodes do exist. I do not know how they exist. I do know something about their characteristics: they exist in dynamic equilibrium and the field they radiate exists concurrently with energy flows, as with all electromagnetic systems. The three main energy flows of yoga are the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. These are, as I relate to them, the following: 1. the Sushumna ties the 7 nodes together centrally and as such I refer to it as the "Central"; 2. the Ida and Pingala flow between the nodes 180 degrees from each other and perpendicular to the Sushumna much the same as a sine wave; 3. In orientation to the body, the Ida and Pingala are the left-hand(foot) and right-hand(foot) energies respectively. In relation to spin orientation, the Ida is clockwise(CW) and the Pingala is counter-clockwise(CCW).

As with all electromagnetic systems, there is also another field component 90 degrees to the CW/CCW component which is perpendicular to the Central. It is of lesser field strength and in phase with the CW/CCW. This field component is not alluded to in yoga. It is my experience that this component deals with the aspect of time whereas the CW/CCW component deals with the space aspect of the space/time continuum.

This above described system is the basis for the adult human body. Aspects of development from union of haploid elements into a zygotic expression need to be worked out. In theory, DNA has an energy /field component which is scalar in expression. There is an increasing order of magnitude for morphogenic field expression from DNA -->Cell-->Tissue-->Organ-->Organ System-->Organism. DNA encodes the developmental processes which cause the dividing cells of the Zygote-->Embryo-->Fetus
-->Baby-->Child-->Juvenile-->Adult to find their final orientation to each other and thus contribute to the overall Morphogenic Field of the body. As the non-living ground substance of the body is either collagen, cartilage or bone, these contribute to only the field orientations as laid down upon secretion by cartilage and bone and final fibrous mesh of collagen. Cells live within this matrix and directly as a whole create the Morphogenic Field.

Yoga describes some 72,000 lesser nadis for energy distribution within and without the body. This leads us to the more external system of Acupuncture in Chinese Medicine. The meridians are 14 in number and are said to flow around the body through the head, base of the spine, fingers and toes. Needles, or more recently lasers, stimulate certain points on the body to increase or retard flow of energy in this system. Yoga states that the nadis need to be cleansed. Acupuncture states that the flow of energy needs to be moving freely. Bioelectromagnetic Medicine details the interference of externally applied electromagnetic radiation upon various body systems. In all cases, health is related as a clean, free flowing and non-interfered-with native electromagnetic system. Bioelectromagnetic Medicine is researching the use of various equipment to alter the overall field/energy components so as to harmonize the human body system and regain/maintain a state of health as opposed to needles(lasers) in Acupuncture or meditation in Yoga. The end desired result of Bioelectromagnetic Medicine is to maximize as rapidly as possible the native healing processes of the human body. This implies that practitioners of Bioelectromagnetic Medicine are schooled in the Healing Arts and know the effects of their ministrations. We are all learning.
